Las selecciones peruanas de fútbol, convocadas entre 1911 y 1939, fueron incluyendo a jugadores de diversa procedencia racial y social y que cubrían la mayoría de estereotipos raciales que los limeños utilizaban como parte de su sentido común en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Al principio fueron jugadores blancos, de una moral intachable –de acuerdo a los estereotipos-, personas "decentes". Luego llegaron los afroperuanos, obreros moralizados por el patrón y también por políticas de Estado pero también aquellos trabajadores callejeros, con comportamientos "indecentes", aficionados a la bebida y a la jarana criolla. Junto con ellos aparecieron descendientes de chinos culíes, grupo racial resistido por la mayoría de la élite aunque aprovechados como fuerza de trabajo barata. Los que nunca fueron convocados entre 1911 y 1939 fueron indígenas. La aparición de una identidad "nacional", construida en Lima desde los textos periodísticos y a partir del estilo de juego que expresaban cada uno de los grupos "raciales" mencionados será el objetivo central de esta investigación.
